Case Study English for Speakers of Other Languages

Client: Aurangzeb Tareq

19 year old Aurangzeb Tareq arrived in East London from Kabul, Afghanistan in September 2009.

"I had learnt some English there but I don't think the teaching was very good because when I arrived I couldn't understand much and nobody could understand me! My pronunciation was hopeless."

"When I arrived in London I went to many colleges but I was so confused and disappointed. A friend told me about Newham College so I came here and I was surprised at how friendly everyone was."

He enrolled onto the college's Count Me In programme in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and has made rapid progress in a short time. "I enjoy the course, all the teachers are kind and very helpful. It isn't always easy, people speak fast, you have to take tests – and you have to talk in English. But I think it is the best way. And it is free!"

Aurangzeb had to leave his home and friends behind when he left Kabul. He is the only person from Afghanistan on the course, but he settled in fast and made friends, "I like Newham College and the local area, it's a good place, a safe place. I help my dad leafleting so I have got to know East London by walking the streets. At home I listen to the radio a lot – listening is important."

The ESOL courses offered by CIPs at Newham College aren't only about learning the language. They are designed to help people integrate into UK culture and to offer employment and training advice.

Aurangzeb's aim is to train and find work in IT, graphics and design: "You mustn't waste your time – time cannot be returned. When I improve my English I hope to study many things at Newham College."
